Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens
July 29 @ 12:00 am
Rugby sevens is a condensed form of rugby union, played with teams of 7 instead of 15. Since 1998, it has been a principal part of the Commonwealth Games, which is unsurprising given the lung-busting sprinting, last-ditch tackling, and high-scoring fixtures on show! It is a fantastic example of Commonwealth sport – the format is recognisable, and the appeal is immediately obvious, but rugby sevens offers up an extra dose of flair and vibrancy, compared to the orthodox format.
As is the case in the traditional game, New Zealanders are a force to be reckoned with – the men’s team has claimed gold on all but 1 occasion, and the women’s team topped the podium in 2018.
