But it’s not just about the competition – the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo also celebrates and honors the rich history and cultural significance of African American cowboys and cowgirls. This event is named after legendary cowboy Bill Pickett, known as the “Dusky Demon,” who invented bulldogging (steer wrestling) and was one of the first African Americans to gain fame in rodeo.
